What are dugongs? Dugongs are herbivorous marine mammals belonging to the order Sirenia (the same as manatees). They are the only sirenians that live exclusively in the sea.
They live in warm coastal waters of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific.
They are found especially where there are seagrass meadows, which is their main food. They eat seagrass (not algae).
They feed like sea cows on shallow sandy bottoms.

Fun Facts: They are distant relatives of elephants (they share a common ancestor), very calm, shy, and sensitive to noise and environmental changes.
Coron, Philippines, is one of the few countries where these specimens are sighted 99% of the time, the highest success rate. However, it’s important to understand that the sighting can last for hours because if there’s more than one boat, they approach one at a time and at a considerable distance to avoid invading their natural habitat. We approach by swimming calmly.
All we need is a snorkel mask; the dugongs graze at a shallow depth. In the water, we travel in groups of three, which is usually an exclusive experience, and you can swim with them. Coming to the surface is breathtaking.
